Axminster are staring down the barrel of relegation to the Tolchards Devon Cricket League C Division East after a 72-run defeat at home to Plymstock.

The visitors batted first and managed to score a competent 162.

Dave Field took four wickets for just 21 runs and Dan Fuzzard bagged a brace.

The rain that hit almost every game across the county on the penultimate Saturday of August, hit Cloakham Lawns and the home side certainly ended up with the ‘short straw’ in terms of batting conditions.

They managed to get to 90-5 when stumps were drawn with Gary Larcombe top scoring with 22.

The defeat left Axminster banking just five points and, in terms of the battle to beat the drop, was not enough.

Rivals South Devon banked 10 points from a rain hit game with Shobrooke Park, Braunton bagged a fourth win in five outings to bank another 16 points and Abbotskerswell matched the total the Axemen managed with five points in their defeat at the hands of Ipplepen.

It all means that with Saturday being the final match day of the 2015 season, unless Axminster can win handsomely at Ipplepen who go into the game still with an outside chance of promotion and there’s no play between South Devon and Braunton, then Cloakham Lawns will stage regional cricket in 2016.

That would mean less travelling with the likes of Seaton, Feniton, Kilmington and Cullompton waiting to receive them.
