Honiton opening bat Dave Haysom struck a wonderful double century as Honiton secured a 173-run win over visiting Bideford, Littleham and Westward Ho! at Mountbatten Park.
Haysom opened the innings with Ben Kidson, but lost his opening partner when he was clean bowled for just two. However, the early wicket brought Michael Docherty to the middle and the second wicket did not fall until the Mountbatten Park score board was showing a total of 204!
It was Docherty who was the second man down, but not before he had scored 50 and number four bat Kieran Conway chipped in 32 before skipper Adam Holmes hit 29. It was Haysom who was taking the attack to the visitors though and he thumped ten sixes and struck no fewer than 28 fours on his way to an unbeaten 208 as Honiton closed on a whopping 357-5 after their 45 overs.
Faced with such a daunting target, the visitors did make a decent start, putting on 73 before Corey Lapping made the all important breakthrough with double centurion Haysom taking the catch.
It was soon 96-4 with catches by Ben Kidson, Adam Holmes and Andy Canniford giving wickets to bowlers Rob Ingram, Will Graham and a second for Corey Lapping.
A 64-run partnership for the sixth wicket took the reply to 160 when Ian Kelly bagged a leg before decision and, from 160-4, the last six wickets fell for the addition of just 24 runs as the visitors were bowled out for 184. Kelly claimed another three wickets and there was one for Michael Docherty – Ben Kidson holding two more catches to finish with three pouched on the day. There was also a runout which was initiated by that man Dave Haysom.
In terms of the Honiton bowling effort, Ian Kelly took the honours with his return of 4-22 from 6.2 overs. Core Lapping finished with 2-27 from six overs and there were single wickets for Rob Ingram, Will Graham and Michael Docherty.
The win leaves Honiton sitting second seven games into the Tolchards Devon League E Division East campaign. They are just two points behind leaders Sampford Peverell and Tiverton and next, this coming Saturday (June 23), they entertain basement side Thorverton 2nds, who have so far lost all seven of their matches.
