Uplyme made progress in the Ivor Dewdney Corinthian Cup with a 19-run home victory over Axminster.

This competition sees each team bowl 16 eight-ball overs.

Axminster won the toss and put Uplyme in and Whittington and Richards gave the home side a solid start before Whittington became the first victim, in his case for a quick-fire 19.

O’Hallaran was next in and he saw Richards depart for 28 which brought skipper Steve Batey out to join the Australian. The pair took the game to the Axemen and had added 76 in double-quick time before Batey succumbed to a fine delivery from Larcombe. O’Hallaran was unbeaten on 74 as the Uplyme innings ended with an impressive 179-3 on the score board.

Larcombe and Cross launched the Axminster reply and were going well until Larcombe was caught in the covers for 21. Axminster skipper Miller was next in and he did not last long and was joined back I the pavilion by Larcombe as the reply slipped to 64-3.

Farrow took a while to settle, but then opened his shoulders to take Axminster ever nearer the required total. He saw Cross depart for a useful 41 and got good support also from Field and Whetlor, but at the close, despite hitting a splendid unbeaten 64 Farrow was to end on the losing side as Axminster finished on 160-5. Steve Batey finished with 2-34 and it is he who will lead Uplyme into the next round where they will meet either Honiton of Ottery St Mary.
