Upottery went down by 72 runs at home to Whimple in an East Devon derby.

Shane Kennard and Ryan Pullman both claimed three wickets each as the visitors scored an imposing 315-9.

The run chase began well with 70 on the board without loss after 15 overs, but the asking rate grew and the target looked to be to secure maximum batting points, something they did comfortably.

Gary Kennard (45), Andrew Pullman (31) and Ollie Rice (36no) provided the main contributions as the Upottery reply closed on 243-6.

The defeat leaves the villagers sitting second bottom and now ten points from safety in terms of avoiding slipping down into the basement division.

On Saturday they face another derby game with a trip to Kilmington who were thumped by a huge margin by table topping Babbacombe last time out.

Upottery 2nds were also beaten, in their case by 111 runs at Whimple II. Bruce Inglis bagged a brace of wickets as the home side closed on an imposing 283-5.

Skipper Dan Prettejohn then top scored with an unbeaten 36 and Inglis completed a fine all-round shift with a knock of 30 as the reply closed with the last pair at the wicket and the total 172.
