Whimple led to last over victory by Brown

Whimple 2nd XI claimed a thrilling penultimate ball, victory to defeat Countess Wear II by a single wicket.

The Exeter side batted first and Joe Burden (3-28) and Nick Thornton (2-29) combined to restrict them to 166-8.

Keith Brown then carried his bat to score an unbeaten 81 to lead the hosts to victory.

John Bardot (5no) was with Brown when the win was sealed off the penultimate ball of the match.

Skipper Barry Wright said: “It was a cracking match one that really could have gone wither way right up until the moment we sealed it. Keith (Brown) batted very well, it was a really commanding innings, but then we also bowled and fielded well to leave ourselves a target I always felt we could chase down.”

Whimple 1st XI were beaten by seven wickets at Countess Wear.

Ben Silk top scored with 34 in a total of 134, passed for the loss of just three wickets by the Exeter side.

Silk was the pick of the Whimple bowlers with a brace of wickets.

On Saturday Whimple entertain Feniton in an East Devon derby.
