Whimple are now 25 points clear of third bottom Feniton, and are 14 points ahead of fourth bottom side Braunton after beating them by six wickets when the side’s met in the C Division East on the first Saturday of August.

After putting the North Devon side in, Whimple skipper Ben Silk saw his bowlers work well collectively to bowl Braunton out for 193.

Devon Nightingale (3-27 from nine overs), Cameron Kidd (3-33 from nine) and Matt Brown (3-39 from 8.3 overs), shared the bulk of the wicket-taking duties with the other wicket down to a run out, set up by a Mark Richards throw.

Cameron Kidd completed a fine all-round afternoon’s work, top scoring with an unbeaten 82 as Whimple eased to a six wicket win with almost 10 full overs to spare.

Opener Henry Gordon-Lennox scored 40 and Nathan Kidd chipped in with 32.

Whimple skipper Silk says: “After the loss the week before, this was a ‘must win game’ so to come away with the job done most efficiently is very pleasing. I only had the bare five in terms of bowling and, on such a hot afternoon, switching them round was the key. They all bowled very well and I was quite content to be chasing a sub 200 score.”

As for the successful run chase, Silk says: “Kev [Thompson] and Henry [Gordon-Lennox] gave us the prefect start and then Cameron [Kidd] saw us home.”

With four games left and two of them against sides in the bottom three, Silk says: “We can go to Clyst Hydon this Saturday and look to add to their woes and the week after we have a Feniton side we certainly ‘owe one’ after they beat us first time round.”

Whimple will be missing four players for the trip to Clyst Hydon and Silk says: “This availability issue has been a real problem this season. It does not help in terms of fielding a settled side, which, in turn, should bring a decent season. However, it is what it is and we will mix and match and look to get across there and do the job.”
