Sidmouth and Ottery Hockey Club (SOHC) ladies’ 2nd XI secured their second win of the Sedgemoor Division One season and continued their fine form since the festive break with a 3-1 success at home to Winscombe II.

A week after banking a point from a terrific draw at Yeovil and Sherborne, the ladies were good value for the win with Diana Dormer landing the individual honours with a Player of the Match performance that also saw her net two of the goals.

What made the success all the more impressive was that SOHC, who started the game sitting second from bottom in the table, fell behind before storming back to win and, in the revised table after the latest set of matches, they now sit fourth from bottom and just a single point behind sixth-placed Taunton Vale IV.

Having fallen behind, SOHC levelled from a well-executed short corner routine and then Dormer fired her side ahead after an initial shot had been parried by the home goalkeeper.

Once ahead, SOHC managed the game well, but were grateful to some smart saves by goalkeeper Millie Guy and some determined and disciplined defending from Katie Ackland and Lizzie Nancekivell.

A feature of the win was the industry – and inventiveness – of the SOHC midfield in which the trio of Lucy Gosling, Anna Moroz and Amy Oliver created many chances.

The third goal came when Brucie (Frankie Forsyth) elegantly passed the ball past the keeper to complete the scoring.

Over the next fortnight, SOHC face two games that will surely determine the remainder of their league season as they play an ECV side that sit fourth, three places and 10 points above them in the table and then take on basement side Weston-super-Mare.

If the ladies can come out of the next two games with what would then be an unbeaten four-game unbeaten run, any worries of relegation may well be all but over!
