The Axe Cliff Seniors, throughout the year, play a weekly roll-up, over 15 holes, on Monday/Wednesday, most ably organised by Mick Swann, writes Dave Bruce.

Mick keeps meticulous records and does a super job of presenting The Albert Skinner Salver at his annual awards and buffet on the final day, each November.

This year Bob Graham won the Salver, but Mick was the overall winner for the year, with a great average of 29.8. He was pushed all the way by Dave Morgan, captain of the main club, who came in second with a score of 28.93, just beating Dave Weston into third spot with 28.87.

On Friday the action was set to be a three-man Texas Scramble and 36 were ready to play, but the weather was so bad and, with three holes under water, the competition was called off. However, some 12 golfers hung about for a little while and decided to brave it.

Their bravery won the day with the sun coming out and wind dying down from gale force to just windy and the waterlogged holes became playable to allow them to finish 18 holes before it turned nasty again.

Most got wet – albeit in the car park putting their clubs away! A contingent of some 12 players from Sidmouth, which was closed, also got over 13 holes completed before drinking us dry in the clubhouse.
