Close finishes were the order of the day at the Dart Vale and Haldon Harriers pony races at a wet and cold Buckfastleigh on Sunday. Eight went to post for the 138 cm and under race and there was a great battle between early leader Chloe Grove on Summertime Blaze and eventual winner Robert Williams, who travelled down from the Gealligaer Farmers Hunt in Wales, on Oscar. Oscar eventually pulled ahead to win by five lengths and Summertime Blaze held on despite a great late challenge from Hannah Welch on Superted. Ten year old Victoria Sleep was fourth on Diptford Melika. There was also a blanket finish in the seven runner 148cm and under race, the riders having to endure the worst of the conditions with cold driving rain. Bryony Frost has reigned supreme at this height with Jack Sparrow but she had to settle for second behind Robert Williams who doubled up on wins with Chucka. He got up by one and a half lengths with Henry Armstrong just two lengths third on Ivory Girl.
