Dace Sainsbury and her endurance horse Lottie have been selected for the Team GB Young Riders squad for the European Championships which are being held in Belgium.
The pair, from Lyme Regis, are meeting with team members, physios, vets, farriers and support crews in Dover on September 4, travelling out on September 5 and the competition begins on September 8 at Mont Le Soie in the Ardennes region.
The championships see 60 riders from around 20 European countries battling out over tough terrain on a 129km ride. The tests for the horses will be coping with speed over hills and rough ground whilst maintain good metabolic health, a low heart rate and perfect soundness and muscle tone. All riders selected were asked to attend a final test weekend over August 18/19 to complete a 64km route to enable the vets, physios and management to assess that the overall fitness level of both horse and rider were up to standard before travelling to Belgium.
Dace’s support crew will be her boyfriend James Comber, her mum, and her friend Samantha Mowatt.
Dace said: “ I have had help from many, different people in order to keep Lottie at a championship level standard including the Dorset Equine Clinic, physiotherapist Tim Bradford, and family and friends. A big thank you to Zilco for their kind sponsorship. I really hope we can come back with a medal.”
“I hope that raising awareness for this relatively unknown equestrian discipline will encourage others to try it. As long as you have a horse, you can give it a go!”
