THE 2010 pony racing season ended with a double for Buckfastleigh rider Bryony Frost, a 10 out of 10 record for Devon and Cornwall area 138 champion Hannah Welch from Totnes and a Wessex area 138 final win for Megan Nicholls from Ditcheat.

It was a great day for the sport with all four races being held at the Torrington Farmers point to point, the Wessex area having lost their traditional date when Larkhill, at the end of May, was cancelled. Thanks are due to the hunt committee in particular secretary Carol Norman, for all the extra work they undertook, as well as the stewards, judge, starters etc for giving up the extra time.

Hannah Welch got proceedings under way, leading from pillar to post on Bronze Lawrance who has not been beaten in the area 138s this season - having missed one race due to being balloted out. Welch also retained the area points championship as a result, winning the Synderborough Farm Ltd Rising Stars trophy. Runners were well bunched up as they turned up the hill with Bejowan's Bouquet (Heidi Lewis) having the best run of a consistent season to finish third, just behind Talponciau Perfect Print (Barnaby Treneer) who must be fed up with the view of Bronze Lawrence's behind this year. Barnaby was later presented with the Alan Walter Horse Transport Trophy for the most improved riding performance of the season. This award is always eagerly anticipated as noone knows who will win until it is presented, it being independently judged throughout the season.

Ginger Wizard (Jake Bament) was produced with a great late run to take fourth in the 138s and there were a group of up and coming riders snapping at their heels. It has been great to see new riders Michael Trenner, Edward Barlow and Megan Lawrence emerge this season and we look forward to seeing them again next year.

Frost was next to score, taking the 148cm race with relative ease (compared to South Tetcott) on Tarka, after being matched for early speed by Clover Jess (Chester Williams), Annie IV (Hannah Welch) and Ginger Biscuit (Heidi Lewis). These runners had a false start and Flareon (Chloe Grove) and Ivory Girl (Henry Armstrong) were slow away again at the second time of asking, leaving themselves with an impossible task on the short Umberleigh track.

Flareon's fourth place though was enough to earn Chloe Grove, 15, from Dawlish, the Allerton Organics trophy for the 148cm points championship. Chloe starts a course at the British Racing School in Newmarket in September and she will be much missed having been present for several years on the circuit, enjoying much success in the 138s on Summertime Blaze. Praise must also go to Hannah Welch whose 148 riding has improved enormously this year and she got a great run out of Annie IV to take third.

The Wessex Area 138cm final, sponsored by R W Prince Ltd, was taken by the good pony Angelic (Megan Nicholls), who battled hard to see off Diptford Moonwalker (Vicky Merriman) and Mon Melissa (Mollyann Rees) who travelled down from Wales.

The 148 final was run in exactly the same time as the D and C final, and won by Bryony Frost on the impressive Billie Jean. A former Frost pony Jack Sparrow (Hugo Hunt) gave her a good run for her money with Mick The Miller (Lucy Gould) in third. Bryony was able to run in this as in the Wessex area points are won during the season for wins and placings earning the right to run in the final which isn't restricted to area riders.
