The Axe Vale point to point pony races featured a mile and a half race for the 148s - the first time the riders have tackled the distance over this course. It proved a real challenge with Jack Sparrow winning (Hugo Hunt), ahead of Tarka (Bryony Frost), with Whinney Widget (Josie Gordon) running on in third, and Flareon (Chloe Grove) fourth. Bryony took being beaten by her former pony in good spirit and was delighted with the improvement second time out from Tarka. It was a fascinating race with the riders having to judge their pace to get the trip home and much enjoyed by spectators.Josie Gordon won the ride of the race award for her performance as she lost an iron at the start! There was drama though when Itzibibi ran wide at the top corner unshipping Hannah Welch. She had a bloody nose but fortunately apart from bruises that was her only injury and she was quickly attended to by the paramedics. The 138s had a full complement of 10 starters which included recent Cheltenham winner G Whizz (Megan Nicholls) the pony having previously recorded easy victories on the course under Harry Derham. This time competition was much tougher with the lead changing throughout the final two furlongs, with the runners bunched throughout. G Whizz got home by just half a length from Bejowans Bouquet (Heidi Lewis) with Bronze Lawrance (Hannah Welch) a neck back in third, pushed all the way by Ravara Super Ted (Pippa Glanville). Heidi's second place has opened up the Synderborough Farm Ltd points championship and there are 10 ponies plus a reserve entered in the 138 race at the Modbury point to point on Saturday (Flete Park, first race noon) and seven in the 148 race. Results: 138: 1, G Whizz, Megan Nicholls; 2, Bejowans Bouquet, Heidi Lewis; 3, Bronze Lawrance, Hannah Welch; 4, Ravara Super Ted, Pippa Glanville; 5, Talponciau Perfect Print, Barnaby Treneer; 6, Little Ness, John Dalton-Morgan; 7, Diptford Trina, Tom Dalton-Morgan; 8, Silver Cloud, Jake Bament; 9, Madenlie Daisy Chain, Thomas Hawke; 10, Twinkle Toes, Isabel Hunt. 10 ran 1/2l, nk. 1.25.148: 1, Jack Sparrow, Hugo Hunt; 2, Tarka, Bryony Frost; 3, Whinney Widget, Josie Gordon; 4, Flareon, Chloe Grove, 5, Ginger Biscuit, Bronwen Buttery; 6, Ivory Girl, Henry Armstrong; 7, The Fairy Tinkerbell, Jess Twentyman.
