It was great to see the big guns returning and putting in a quality performance against Lyon in the Heineken Champion’s Cup at the weekend.
However, I’d like to shine a light on the rest of the squad, who held the fort while the internationals were off fighting for glory with their fellow countrymen.
In the week before the Lyon game, Rob Baxter, had some critical words for the young squad that ran out against Gloucester.
It may have sounded harsh at the time and I’m sure people may have expected some positive words about how the lads ran the cherry and whites close for large periods of the game, however certain standards are expected when you pull the Chiefs shirt on… no exceptions.
That said, the squad did their job while the international stars were away, keeping the team in the top two in the Premiership.
The Lyon game was almost as I expected it would be, with a lot of moving parts slotting back together, jumping from one competition to another. But the quality and experience of the Chiefs now can comfortably deal with a decent Lyon outfit.
A typical Chief’s performance in years gone by was a bit of back and forth for 50 to 60 minutes mostly falling behind and then fighting through with extra fitness to hopefully get on top. We expect an 85 to 90-minute performance these days, and we should as domestic double champions.
Now on to Leinster at Sandy Park, A real Juggernaut club in European rugby.
It was also good to see Eddie Jones at Sandy Park having a good look at those performing, the Simmonds brothers surely? I’m sure that Warren Gatland has already been convinced by some of the Chiefs looking forward to the summer.
On another note, there were some Lions-worthy performances on our first run around at Sidford this week, not from myself I may add. A strong turn out with Colts’, Ladies’, and Men’s teams.
Personally, I am thrilled at the turn out from the players and very excited for next week’s session and a chance for me to make up for a few dropped balls from last week!
