The warmer spring weather during the second week of the Easter holiday encouraged many more golfers onto the Lyme Regis course to enjoy the dry conditions underfoot and the now rapidly improving greens.

In addition to the casual club member and visitor players, a number of competitions were staged during the week.

l Two seniors' events were staged during the week with the first being the April Stableford. Although the fairways were running well, many of the participants found the bitingly cold breeze and faster greens difficult to handle and this was reflected in many of the scores.

However, some of the competitors managed to overcome to record highly creditable scores.

In Division One, the ever steady Barry Goswell playing off 15, scored an excellent 37 points. In second place was Richard Thompson (13) with 36 points which included one of only five 'twos.' Third place was taken by John Toates (18) with 34 points. Of the twos scored one was an Eagle two on the par four ninth hole scored by David Hadwin.

In division two the honours went to David Dallas who scored 37 points playing off 20.

In second place was Mike List (22) with 35 points, and third, with 34 points and after a countback, was Alastair Purcell (19) on 34 points.

In warmer conditions, but with some of the greens again proving too quick for a number of the participants, the Seniors Marsh Medal event was staged on Monday 19 April.

Although the medal format is not to everyone's liking and meant a reduced field from the Stableford events, the competition was well attended with some very good rounds of golf played.

In first place, after finally achieving what he has been threatening to do for a while, was John Coley with a net 67 playing off 8. Second place was taken by Bob Kay (17) with a net 68. In third place, on countback and despite having to take "3 off the tee" on the last but one hole, was David Hickman (16) with a net 68.

l Lyme Regis Junior team of Scott Love, Jonathan Ebdon, George Seed, David Lyon, George Yorke and Kai To Li played a hard fought contest at home against Dudsbury in the first leg of their Dorset League match. Top player Scott Love knew that, playing off scratch, he had a hard match against the reigning Dorset under 14 champion who had a 3 shot advantage and, although Scott battled hard, he was finally outplayed 3-2. Jonathan Ebdon went 8 up after 8 holes, but his opponent rallied valiantly to close the difference to 2 holes at the end.

George Seed, playing his usual steady round of golf, gained a valuable half. David Lyon, at all square after 17 holes, birdied the last. George Yorke achieved a vital one hole victory on the last hole. Kai To Li's two hole victory secured a team win of 41/2 to 11/2.

lThe annual Andrew Black 4 ball better ball qualifying competition was disrupted by sea mist, disappointing the early starters.

They will have to try to repeat their impressive effort when the competition is rescheduled.
