Feniton CC stalwart Brian Cann marked his first innings of the pre-season with a slick half century in a warm-up game at Acland Park on Sunday afternoon against Bradninch II.

Cann opened the innings and stroked his way to an excellent 73 before he was bowled. Zac Hawes was the best of the rest with a knock of 18 from the number six berth as Feniton closed on 169-8 in their 40 overs.

Fifteen-year-old William Birley was the pick of the visiting bowlers with his eight over spell seeing him return figures of 2-28 and there were two wickets also for Connor Carthew and Lewie Farrant.

The visitors only had nine men and so Adie Pullin, who had been bowled by Birley for 11, batted for the Mid Devon side and he very nearly led his ‘adopted team for the afternoon’ to victory hitting an aggressive 51 before being stumped by Pete Avery off Fran Pyle after a cameo that included three 6s and four 4s. Connor Carthew top scored for Bradninch with 32, Rob McManus hit 24 and skipper Bryn Jones scored 32.

However, John Pyle (3-16), Ben Kitson (2-15) and Sam Titmus (2-25) did the bulk of the damage as the final visiting wicket fell with the reply on 159 to leave Feniton 10-run winners.

Tracey Cann and her helpers produced a wonderful tea enjoyed by all mid-innings.

There was an amusing start to the game with Feniton’s Fran Perryman sportingly acting as fielder for 9-man Bradninch, claiming the first two catches of the season at Acland Park to help dismiss team mates!
