The men’s indifferent start to the season continued with a narrow defeat by local rivals Ottery St Mary by 79-81 in the County Trophy competition. The two away rinks won earned four points, the winning rinks were J Livings, A Smith, D Coyne and J Skinner 23-13 and R Cooke, E Cox, D Evans and K Lovering 25-19, writes Roger Smith.
The ladies were drawn against the powerful Madeira Ladies in the Grace Matthews cup and lost in all five disciplines.
The men’s over-60s A team recorded their first win, defeating Dunkeswell by 37-31 securing all eight points. The winning rinks were E Cox, A Smith and A Evans 20-15 and J Livings, M Chipperfield and P Edmonds 17-16. The B team’s early season form deserted them as they lost away to Morchard Bishop by 21-49.
The mixed team also suffered a defeat away at Phear Park losing by 58-80. The only winning rink was G Smith, E Cox, S Kury and D Evans 21-19.
The weekend was devoted to the Ladies’ and the Gent’s two wood singles. The semifinals produced three very close matches. In the men’s semi-finals G Phillips defeated A Smith 15-12 on the last end and Kury defeated D Evans on an extra end by 13-12. In the ladies’ semi-finals J Smith defeated L. Eveleigh by 14-13 on the last end and D Pillips defeated J Edwards by 17-5. In the men’s final, A Kury defeated G Phillips by 17-6.
The ladies’ final was a real nail biting affair with D Phillips defeating J Smith, winning with the last wood by 15-13.
