Feniton 2, Topsham Town 1 Feniton’s Acland Park surface once again came up trumps on another day when grounds the length and breadth of Devon were left waterlogged.

Mike Court once again worked his magic with the Feniton pitch and got support from manager Mark Kingdom and some of the players who were on parade at noon prior to a pitch inspection with forks in hand!

The hard work by Court and others paid dividends for not only did the pitch play well, the Blues banked three more points in their quest to retain the Fresha League Premier Division title.

It was a powerful first half show that took the Blues to a seventh success in ten top flight games.

Dave O’Connor headed them into the lead and a strike by Dan Norman just before the interval sent the home side into the break with a 2-0 advantage.

In the second half Feniton continued to create chances, but a third goal was not forthcoming and the visitors halved the deficit with a neat finish to set up a nervous end for the home faithful. However, Blues keeper Matt Kingdom was called into action to make one fine save late on, but despite the close score line, Feniton were comfortable winners at full-time.

Boss Mark Kingdom said: “We played well in what were understandably heavy conditions. I do think a lack of match fitness – we had not played for almost a month – played its part, especially in the second half when we created chances to finish them (Topsham) off, but failed to take them.”

Kingdom continued: “It was important that we played and won as it keeps us amongst the leading sides. I do feel it’s a four-team title race this year and when I sit back and take an overview, the fact is we are currently only five points shy of where we were twelve months ago when of course we served up a tremendous run that took us to the top honour.”

On Saturday Feniton travel to a Hatherleigh side that inflicted their only Premier League defeat this season to date when they won 2-1 at Acland Park at the end of November.

Kingdom says: “They beat us fair and square back in November on a day when I felt we did not play anywhere near our best. That will not be the case in North Devon on Saturday.”

Charlie Selley and Alex Frankpitt are both back for the trip to Hatherleigh and central defender Ali Sawyer, who has been out with a back injury, may well be fit enough to travel too.
