FENITON served up the headline-making result of the weekend with a 7-0 success at high-flying Chagford. When the two sides met at Acland Park back in November, the Blues were hit for six, but the tables were turned emphatically.

Charlie Selley, Paul Dowling, Danny Lewis and an own goal put the Blues four up at the break. Selley struck twice more in the second half to go with one from Richard Austin as the Blues ran out comfortable winners.

Austin marked his first game back with the Blues since returning to Acland Park after a spell at St Martin’s, but it was the display from the middle of the park that had Blues’ boss Mark Kingdon purring.

He said: “Charlie (Selley) and Ben (Allen) were simply superb. They were at the heart of everything. I was not in the least surprised by the performance or the score line for we have been steadily improving over the past few weeks and, as bad as the November show was against Chagford at Acland Park, this performance was probably as good as anything have witnessed from a Feniton side in the past three years.”

The win lifts the Blues to a lofty fifth-from-bottom, and they are now 10 points clear of the drop zone they were very much a part of just five games ago.

Now the rejuvenated Blues face back-to-back meetings with table topping Morchard Bishop. Kingdon says: “We are in the right sort of form to be playing the table toppers and it will be a good measure of just how improved we are. There remain 11 games to play and 33 points to battle for. We have certainly turned the corner.”

There was no top flight action for either Seaton Town or Beer Albion. Table topping Town had no game and so set up a friendly at Civil Service but that fell to a waterlogged Exeter pitch.

Town boss Josh Stunell said: “It was disappointing not to get the game in as I wanted to work on a few things. We are trying to set up a game for this Thursday night, as I want us to be bang on the button on Saturday when we go to Willand Rovers Reserves.”

Stunell was at the Mid Devon side’s ground last midweek to run the rule over both their next opponents and, indeed, title rivals Sidmouth Town who were the opposition in a 1-1 draw.

Stunell said: “It was a most worthwhile trip to make as I picked up one or two pointers to both of the sides. The Willand game will be tough, they are always likely to include a couple of players on the edge of the Western league top flight first team and given that they held a useful Sidmouth side 1-1, that suggests they are a very capable side themselves.”

Town have no injury worries for the game at Willand and they were further boosted by the fact that they did not lose their leadership of the Premier Division last weekend as the team who could have overtaken them, Newtown, had to call their game off.

Beer Albion were scheduled to be the opposition for Newtown but a waterlogged pitch at Newton St Cyres denied the Fishermen the opportunity to do Seaton a favour!

This weekend the Fishermen, who stay sixth in the top flight, host a University side who are four points and as many places, below them in the table.

Fishermen boss Mark wards says: “You can never be certain as to what sort of side the University will put out but you can always count on that team being very quick, with bags of energy so we will need to be at our best to ensure that we are able to bring something home with us.”

No action again for Honiton Town as their game at fellow strugglers Elmore, met a watery end.

Only four matches were played in Division One and no further damage was done to the Town chances of avoiding the drop into the Second Division. Town have only played four league games since the end of November, and are unbeaten in them all. However, of greater concern to boss Paddy Thomas will be his side’s lack of action. Town played just one game in February and they are left without a league game this coming Saturday either! They are next in action on Saturday week when they travel to Witheridge.

Colyton were without a game on Saturday and that means the Division two strugglers have played just twice since January 15. They have completed the first half of their season but that leaves them with another 14 to negotiate in the final three months starting with a difficult-looking home game against high flying Phoenix Club this weekend. When the sides met in Exeter in November the home side won 5-0.

Offwell Rangers were another side without a game – their trip to Exmouth Amateurs was called off – and that saw Upottery climb above them in the table after a 2-1 win over visiting Winkleigh.

Catalan Pislaru continued his rich vein of scoring with the opener and that was the only goal of the first half.

A penalty conceded by the usually outstanding Gary Moore, saw the visitors back level but Keith Lane ensured a happy Saturday night for Dan Prettejohn and his side with what proved to be the winner. Adrian Coombe produced the stand-out individual display for the villagers, who next take on Offwell Rangers in a local derby this coming weekend.

Seaton Town Reserves’ Division Four promotion hopes took a knock when they lost 2-0 to mid-table Hemyock. Town face the long trek to Thorverton on Saturday before back to back home games.

Dunkeswell had their Division Five game at Sampford Peverell rained off. The Dunks are this weekend faced with a visit from the section’s last remaining unbeaten side, University Fourths, who beat them 7-2 when the sides met in Exeter before Christmas.

Also in Division Five, Beer Albion Reserves were thumped 6-2 at home by AFC Sidford leaving boss Ross Moughton to lament: “That was, without doubt, the poorest Beer Reserves’ display in my eight and half years of being involved in one way or another. We were simply woeful and I shall be expecting a big, big response next time out.”

It all started so well for the Fishermen as Sam Phillips struck a superb opener, but it went downhill rapidly.

Sidford struck four times before Justin Adkin rifled in a second for the home side only for the visitors to notch twice more and seal a resounding win. There’s no Saturday game for the Fishermen, but they are in Sunday action with a Carlisle Cup tie against Kentisbeare.

Axmouth United were left kicking their heels on Saturday when their Division Six game at Hatherleigh fell foul of a waterlogged surface, but they were in action on Sunday in a Golesworthy Cup tie against Lympstone. United made a dreadful start to the game and were three down inside 17 minutes!

Two minutes after the Lympets struck their third, the comeback was launched via a superb strike from Stuart Ackroyd. Ashley Poynton added the second, but that proved to be the final goal of the first half, sending United into the break 3-2 down.

Jamie Hughes tucked away a penalty to level things up and the lead was taken courtesy of Joe Berry. Further goals followed from Asa Sandman, Charlie Clarke and Christian Burridge as United sealed a 7-3 victory and a quarter final tie with local rivals Beer Albion.

Honiton Town reserves went down 4-0 at home to high flying Clyst Valley Thirds, but there was a fine win for Awliscombe who were 7-2 winners at Uplowman Athletic, reigniting their Division Six promotion challenge. This weekend the Town second string host Bampton, whilst the Awls play host to Hatherleigh Town.

In Division Eight, Feniton Thirds went down to a 5-2 Acland Park defeat to Morchard Bishop. This weekend the Blues make the short trip to meet Tipton St John and Offwell Rangers Reserves are also on the road, they travel to Morchard Bishop.
