Feniton banked five points from a brace of Easter weekend matches that sees them now almost certain of a top four finish in the Fresha League top flight.

However, for the side crowned champions just twelve months ago that fourth slot finish represents something of a disappointment for Blues boss Mark Kingdon.

He said: “We have been hamstrung this season with a glut of injuries and key players were either unavailability for big games or indeed injured. The fact that we are now unbeaten in five is no surprise to me for, in the last five games, we have been able to field full strength teams and that’s led to us beating a fancied Tiverton Town and held Newtown 0-0.”

The draw at Newtown was on Saturday and Kingdon felt his team ought to have taken all three points.

He said: “We hot the frame of the goal twice and I don’t think any neutrals who witnessed the action would deny us as being the team who deserved to win the game.”

On Easter Monday the Blues’ were 4-2 winners at Topsham Town where their goals were scored by Ben Ede, Danny Lewis, Charlie Selley and Dave O’Connor.

There’s still plenty left for the Blues in the current season. Despite only now being able to finish fourth and so miss the opportunity to apply for promotion to the South West Peninsula League, they are still involved in two cup competitions.

They face a semi-final in the East Devon Senior Cup against University and are also in the last four of the Morrison bell Cup along with Division Three side Upottery, Division One Sidbury and Peninsula League side Budleigh Salterton.

Kingdon says: “I’d love to have another crack at St Martins if we can get past the students and contest the East Devon Senior Cup final.”

There is a fly in the Feniton ointment and that is a fixture the Fresha League have pencilled in for them on Saturday, May 3.

That’s also the opening day of the 2014 Francis Clark Devon Cricket League season and given that half the Feniton players also turn out for the village cricket team there’s going to have to be some give and take by someone to hopefully allow the players to be involved in both football and cricket matches!
