Fontez classic seals Fishermen another clean sheet success

Beer Albion struck one of their most impressive results of the season with a single goal win at University.

The points were not sealed until virtually the last kick of the game when Pedro Fontez got on the end of a sweeping move in which Matty Rowson was a key figure, and, when the ball arrived at Fontez’s feet some 20 yards from goal, he unleashed a fierce drive that flew into the net beyond the despairing dive of the Students keeper.

The win was no more than the Fishermen deserved. Three times they created gilt edged chances in the first half but were denied goals either by poor finishing or superb goal keeping.

Typical of this was an effort from Chris Long that looked to be heading for the net until the Students keeper made a stunning save. After the break, Long had another shot saved.

It was not a one-way contest though, and Beer’s Steve Jones had to be at his best to keep out a couple of fierce strikes from the Students.

Fishermen’s boss Phil Crabb said: “We put in a very good shift. In the first half we created a number of chances that, had they gone in, would have been no more than we deserved.

In the second half, they (University) came back into the game and we dug deep but I felt we were fully deserving of the three points, even if the goal that won it came with virtually the last kick”

This weekend Beer turn their attention to looking to do some giant killing as they travel to Stoke Gabriel to meet the South West Peninsula league side in the Graddon Vending, Devon Premier Cup.

Crabb says of the game: “We can travel with absolutely nothing to worry about. Nobody will expect us to win but I will certainly expect us to put on a show. It’s a chance for the players to enjoy a big game and make the most of the occasion.”
