AXMINSTER Town dished up a performance befitting their apparent Jekyll and Hyde season as they tumbled to a 3-0 Sector Lane defeat at the hands of Eastern Division strugglers Exmouth Town.

In fairness to the Tigers, they were forced to go into the game without a number of regular, senior players, missing owing to illness or suspension and that meant a call-up for youngsters Ben Vine and Jamie Barfoot who were given debuts on either flank.

There was a moment of high controversy on the half hour when Ollie Highett was bearing down on goal only to be poleaxed by the out-rushing Exmouth keeper Adrian Pullin.

On another day the visiting keeper would surely have been despatched for an early bath as he had clearly denied the Tigers' player a goal-scoring opportunity, but he stayed on the pitch and then watched as the resultant free kick sailed above his crossbar.

The visitors took the lead when the unfortunate Chris Higgs, who had a fine game, dropped the ball and the Town centre forward stabbed the ball home and that proved to be the only score of a fairly mundane first half.

The visitors doubled their lead when an uncharacteristic Adam Cowling mistake was seized upon and the Exmouth centre forward finished well and completed a hat-trick later in the game to seal the victory.

Tigers' boss Ray Self said: "That was one almighty missed opportunity. We really did not play well and, whilst the lengthy absentee list and heavy playing surface were indeed factors, the blunt truth is that too many of the senior players in the side simply went missing during the game. It was one very disappointing afternoon at the office."

This weekend the Tigers travel to Alphington and will welcome back Mike Hancock after his suspension but talented youngster Ben Turner will be missing as he begins a ban for picking up yellow cards with Tiverton Town under-18s and the Tigers. Danny Galloway also misses the trip to Exeter through suspension.

Self said: "I shall be expecting a positive response from the side at Alphington."
