Axminster Town were beaten 3-1 in their pre-season friendly at home to Bridport, but there was plenty for Tigers’ followers to be impressed with on the night.
Western League side Bridport led 3-0 at half-time, but a much improved second half from the Tigers saw them ‘win’ the second period thanks to a goal from Tony Cox, before succumbing to an overall 3-1 defeat.
Joint boss Josh Stunell said: “It was another good work out and, while we were second best to a physical opposition side in the first half, during the break we managed to have a good chat with the lads and the second half saw a much improved show and I think we showed the home faithful enough for them to be feeling confident abut the coming league campaign.”
Stunell, who is joint manager at Tiger Way along with Johnny Hurford, continued: “This pre-season really has gone very well and, hand on heart, I don’t think I have ever been involved with a squad that appears to be ‘as ready’ as we are.
“Everybody is clearly pulling in the same direction and there’s little doubt that we are all after the same end result, success for the football team out on the pitch. I have been so impressed since arriving at the club as to how ‘professional’ everything is.”
He continued: “What we need now is a decent start to the campaign and we will certainly be looking to achieve that, though we certainly have what can only be described as a challenging start to the season in terms of our fixtures!”
Town launch their South West Peninsula Eastern Division season on Friday week when Stunell will come face to face with his former club Sidmouth Town, who are at Tiger way for the season’s opening game (7.30pm).
Before that there’s one more pre-season game with a Saturday (August 4), Tiger Way meeting with Cornish side St Blazey (3pm).
