Axminster Town bagged a 10th win of the South West Peninsula League, Eastern Division season with a 2-1 Tiger Way victory before a crowd of 306 at Tiger Way.

The game was the third of the Good Friday Groundhop matches – the first two had been in the morning at Sidmouth and the afternoon in Exeter, this after Honiton Town’s pitch had been declared unfit and the fixture switched to the all-weather home of Exwick Villa.

The game only went ahead thanks to a ‘volunteer army’ summoned by social media to help brush water off the Tiger Way surface in readiness for the game.

Town were excellent value for the win in a contest that was played out on a heavy surface with all three of the contest’s goals coming before half-time.

Darren Hutchings was outstanding for the Tigers and orchestrated much of their positive attacking play.

The opening goal arrived in the 14th minute with Jon Hurford getting some assistance from the soggy surface when the ball sat up sweetly in a muddy goalmouth giving the Tigers’ player-manager the opportunity to sweep the ball home.

Seven minutes later Charlie Skilton and Kieran Daniels combined prior to Skilton providing the ‘assist’ to a Sam Dibling goal to fire the home side into a 2-0 lead.

A mistake by Tigers’ glovesman Scott Wells-Burr gifted the Mid Devon side a goal back in the 32nd minute, but that proved to be the end of the goal scoring as Town closed the game out well after the break to deservedly bank all three points.

Town are back in action on Wednesday night when they make the short trip across East Devon to Budleigh Salterton for an Eastern Division meeting that kicks off at 7.30pm.
