Axminster Town became the first team to defeat Stoke Gabriel in South West Peninsula League Eastern Division action when they beat the South Devon side 3-0 under the Tiger Way floodlights in a midweek meeting.

Town were simply irresistible in the opening 20 minutes when they blew the visitors away, racing into a three goal lead that they never looked like relinquishing.

Leading scorer Tony Pinder added two more to his impressive early season tally and the other Tigers’ goal came from Luke Finn. However, it was another home player, Callum Garrett, who laid claim to the honour of being names Tigers’ Man of the Match.

Town, who now entertain another leading side, Bovey Tracey tomorrow (Saturday) - kick-off at Tiger Way is 3pm - can go into the game with third-in-the-table Bovey in high confidence.

Joint boss Josh Stunell says: “Against Stoke, who by the way are a good side - I’d have to say the best we have met over 90 minutes so far this season - and we really did just blow them away. It was as good a performance as we have served up since the first ball was kicked in anger this season. But you know what, that performance did not surprise Johnny [fellow joint Town manager Johnny Hurford] or I, for we knew the lads had that sort of a collective shift in them.”

As for the Bovey Tracey game, Stunell says: “More of the same is what we will be asking of the lads pre kick-off on Saturday. It’s tough on the team, for Tuesday night was so good that we can now say to them ‘you have set the bar now lads’ and that means they need to be looking to stay at a level of consistency that matches that superb performance against Stoke Gabriel. I don’t think the opposition expected that on Tuesday night, so we might have lost a little of the surprise factor in terms of Bovey Tracey will have seen that score line and will know what to expect. However, once again, as I said before the Stoke game. It really has to be all about playing our own game and, if we can match the levels we reached against Stoke then we will once again get our just rewards against Bovey Tracey.”

Sam Dibling, who missed the midweek win, returns to an otherwise unchanged Tigers squad for the game.
