Axmouth United made to work hard for success at Winkleigh

Winkleigh 0, Axmouth United 3

Basement dwellers Winkleigh put up a performance that belied their lowly status, and, on a soggy, muddy pitch, United had to work hard to secure another three points.

With half-time looming Asa Sandman broke down the right and his fierce cross caught the keeper by surprise at his near post and he could only palm it into his own net to give United a slender interval lead.

The second half saw United play with greater tempo and it was no more than they deserved when Jake Dack rifled a superb shot from 25-yards that was nestling in the top corner before the keeper moved! It was soon 3-0 as Reece Hales supplied the assist for Man of the Match Christian Burridge to score.

United boss Laurie Forino breathed a sigh of relief at the full time whistle. He said: “Everyone would have expected us to win this one today given the positions the two teams occupy in the table. The pitch was a great leveller and the Winkleigh lads worked really hard and certainly are better than their league placing suggests! We did dominate more after the break and the home keeper produced an amazing shift. The win is important as we now have a tough fixture away to Bampton followed by what looks like being a real Christmas cracker at home to Exmouth on December 21, so we will need to be in top form.”
