Honiton Town Reserves were 4-2 winners when they made the short trip to Newton Poppleford for a Firewatch Devon Senior Cup tie.

Matt Ayres was the star of the Hippo’s show with a commanding shift at centre half.

Blake Fremantle fired Town into an early lead, one that was erased before the break by the home side.

In the second half a slick finish from Brett Sellick restored the Town lead and Louis Grant made it 3-1. However, the home side kept plugging away and scored a deserved second. That made things interesting for the closing stages, but, with five minute remaining Freemantle finished what he started and scored the games sixth and final goal.

Dan Broom was the stand-in team manager and he said: “We began at great tempo, but then seemed to lose our way, mainly because we had been unable, in the first half, to put chances away! That said, we got it right in the end and deserved to win.
