Axminster Town were beaten by the odd goal in seven in their opening fixture of a new South West Peninsula League, Eastern Division season, writes Steve Birley.
It was a case of ‘in with the new’ for the Tigers who were making their first appearance at their new temporary home of Colyton School for their game with Appledore.
It was also the first time the Tigers have gone into league action under the management of Gary McCauley and in their side they had a player who just three months before had been part of the Willand Rovers side who lifted the Western League Cup!
Danny Baily marked an impressive league debut for the Tigers with two goals.
The North Devon side struck the opening goal of the game in the 10th minute, but Baily tucked a way a classic goal to level things up within four minutes.
A second for Appledore in the 20th minute was added to from a corner to give them a 3-1 lead at the break.
Barely a minute of the second half had been played when Baily struck his second, but Appledore restored the two goal advantage with 15 minutes remaining.
A late header from Adam Downes set up a frenetic finish, but it was too little, too late, and the Tigers slipped to an opening day defeat.
