Beechy nets only goal as Millwey Rise Reserves win

Without a first team match it was left to Millwey Rise Reserves to chalk up their second win of the season with a victory over Shepton Beauchamp at Cloakham Lawns, writes Dick Sturch.

It was a real battle for supremacy as both teams currently languish at the bottom of the Perry Street League Division Three table.

Matt Beechy opened the scoring for the home side 12 minutes into the first half and that proved to be the only goal of the game!

Goal scoring chances were few and far between after this, but those that fell to Shepton were thwarted by some excellent saves from James Whetlor in the Millwey goal. He was ably assisted by Wayne Jenkins who had a great game at the heart of the Millwey defence.

In the second half play swung from end-to-end, but neither team could find another goal. The nearest came when the home side struck the bar deep into the second half. Millwey deserved this much needed win and what is encouraging for them is the younger players now being introduced into the reserves.

Their performance and willingness to compete for a place in the team bodes well for the future of both teams. Division One table-topping Barrington visit Cloakham Lawns on Saturday to take on the Millwey Rise first team whilst the Reserves head to Chard United. Both games kick-off at 2pm.
