The party that travelled comprised of 14 players together with family and friends and the tournament organisers arranged a coach to collect the group and transport them from Colyton to France via the Dover to Calais channel crossing route.
Once in France the coach made its way to Charles De Gaulle airport where another team got on board and this turned out to be a Brazilian Under-13 side.
The two groups of players were then driven to the tournament at Disneyland.
In terms of the football played Cobras played very well throughout the competition and ended as Plate winners.
There was one more huge surprise for the team and indeed the whole party that travelled with them. On the night of the end of tournament presentations Colyton Cobras, held at Planet Hollywood, were named as the winners of the tournament Fair Play award!
The return journey saw them travel with the Brazilians - who finished third behind eventual winners Belfast Youth from Northern Ireland – to Charles De Gaulle airport and, during the journey, shorts were swapped with the Brazilians which probably means the Colyton Cobras – next year playing as an Under-14 team – will need a new kit!
Cobras coach Jon Sweetland said: “It really was a fantastic trip. I got the impression that everyone who travelled brought back some superb memories from what was a most enjoyable visit to France. We made some great friendships, particularly with the Brazilian team who had one member who spoke good English and so was able to act as a translator. There’s plenty of Brazil shirts now in Devon and Colyton Cobras shirts in Brazil!”
Colyton, as a youth football club, plan to make this sort of an end-of-season experience a regular thing and it is likely that next year’s Under-13s will follow the route taken by this year’s team.
This year’s annual Colyton Youth Tournament, one that is always well supported, takes place over the weekend of May 30 and 31.
Meanwhile the club are looking for new player’s top join their Under-6, 7 and 8 teams for next season. For more information on all things Colyton Youth FC
