Feniton had a superb pre-season victory when they beat Toolstation league outfit Wellington 1-0.
The goal was created and scored by the two players who have been training pre-season at Willand Rovers; Charlie Selley with the assist and Paul Dowling with the finish.
Both players were involved in the Willand FA Cup tie on Saturday, Dowling saw late action but Selley warmed the bench for the duration.
Feniton boss Mark Kingdon says: “I am very hopeful both lads will opt to stick with us. I do feel that, at the age they are, they’ve plenty of time ahead of them and another season with us would do neither any harm in the grander scheme of things. They are both big players for us and we are always going to be a more competitive team with them in the side.”
Feniton have made one big summer signing with the arrival of Phil Everett. The Talaton-based veteran player has scored a goal at Wembley; he played there with Tiverton Town, and spent last season as a regular fixture in the Exmouth Town side that cantered to the South West Peninsula League Eastern Division title.
Kingdon says: “Phil has been there and done it and certainly wears the shirt very well. He brings lots of experience to us and will, I am sure, turn out to be a key player this season.”
The Blues squad has a similar look to last season’s title winning group and will be expected to challenge again for the top honour, if they are able to retain the services of Dowling and Selley.
Matt Hesford, Alex Frankpitt and Josh Fenwick all played their part last season and Kingdon is confident that the trio will deliver again this term.
He said: “The key to last season’s success was the depth of the squad and the fact that players stepped up and filled in wherever and got the job done. I am looking forward to the new season.”
With cricket still on the scene the Blues make a belated start to the new Fresha campaign which starts in earnest this Saturday.
Feniton begin next Wednesday with Clyst Valley their first opponents.
They have one more warm-up game, entertaining Tiverton Town Under-18s at Acland Park tomorrow (Thursday) with a 7.45pm kick-off.
