Beer Albion 2, Feniton 5
Feniton’s nap hand of goals added nicely to the six they scored in a midweek win at Willand Rovers to bolster their bid for the top honour in the Fresha Devon and Exeter League.
The Blues raced into a two-goal lead with clinical strikes, first from Dave O’Connor who drilled a shot home from 30-yards and then a 25-yard blast from Andy Jones. Master marksman Charlie Selley made it three, but the Fishermen got one back from the penalty spot before the break to go into half-time with some hope.
A second for the home side early in the second half was only a temporary blow to the Blues title charge for they struck twice more through Ben Allen and a second from Charlie Selley to end comfortable winners.
Blues boss Mark Kingdon said: “I thought we ought to have won by a greater margin. They (Beer) are a good side and in Richard Walker have a class act who can hurt any defences. For us now it has to be all about holding our nerve. We sit top yes, but we have played two games more than Hatherleigh who do have a tough run-in and if we keep winning then they simply have to win their matches and that adds to the pressure at this time of the season. We also have a couple of games which could derail our bid, but we are now playing football of the type we were producing on a consistent basis earlier in the season and, for a manager, that’s music to my ears as it means we have run into form at precisely the right time.”
In a midweek mauling of Willand Rovers Reserves Dave O’Connor (2), Ben Allen, Paul Dowling and Charlie Selley netted in a 6-2 success.
Feniton have five to play starting with Saturday’s trip to relegation threatened Exmouth Amateurs. They then face Morchard Bishop home and away and currently end their season with a May 8 evening game at University. There is one outstanding game to be arranged and that’s a visit to current basement dwellers Budleigh Salterton Reserves.
