First win for Tigers

AXMINSTER Town supporters were celebrating a rare victory at their Sector Lane headquarters on Saturday evening.
After a miserable run of 17 games without a win, the Tigers finally broke their duck with a well-deserved 1-0 victory over visiting Totnes & Dartington.
From the first whistle, the Tigers looked the sharper of the two teams.
With a new-look back four, hard-working midfield and willing forward line, it was the Tigers who bossed the proceedings throughout the first half.
However, they were unable to take one of a number of decent first half scoring opportunities.
The game followed a similar pattern after the break with the hosts always looking the more likely to break the deadlock.
Midway through the half, a Totnes player was sent off for dissent and the Tigers were quick to press home their numerical advantage.
Changes were made with Jack Andrews one of the new introductions.
It was Andrews who got away down the flank and, when he delivered a fine cross after a fleet-footed run down the wing, Terry Emmett thumped the ball home, much to the delight of another healthy Sector Lane turn-out.
For the remaining 15 minutes, the Tigers ensured that there would be no visitors’ comeback and they were good value for a single goal success.
A delighted Tigers’ boss, Nick Ogden, said: “Finally we have got that elusive first win and we can look to build on what was a very good performance from all areas of the team.
“The whole matchday squad played their part. The new centre back partnership was solid but then, all over the pitch, we were strong.
“We did the basics well and physically we more than matched the opposition.
“I'm sure you could hear the cheer that greeted the goal, and then the final whistle, pretty much all over Axminster".
Leo Maguire was named Man of the Match, closely followed by his central defensive partner, Mike Knight.
Ogden said: “We have now set a level of performance I want to see every week; we know we can improve still further on this.”
On Saturday, the Tigers entertain Newton Abbot Spurs.
