Beer were edged out by the odd goal in three at home to the Premier Division table topers.
The Fishermen gave a very good account of themselves and, despite the classy visitors dominating much of the contest there was sufficient in the match from the hosts to suggest that on another day they may well have taken something for their efforts.
Boss Phil Crabb said: “We were under the cosh for long periods. However, we were unfortunate to go in a goal down as they scored deep into first half added time. Then, after they doubled their lead they were reduced to ten men and we picked up well and made them work hard to close the game out. Heavitree look a very solid side. But I saw enough from our lads to know that if we can find some greater inner belief then we’ll be okay this season.”
Luke Bartlett scored the Beer goal.
On Saturday Crabb’s side travel into Exeter to meet Newtown.
The Fishermen’s boss says: “It’s another tough game against one of the supposedly fancied teams. We are still a little short of full strength as we wait for injuries to clear up, but we can travel in good heart.”
