Honiton Youth Under-15s were 2-1 winners when they visited Copplestone Rangers for their latest Exeter and District Youth League game.
With several regulars unavailable, Honiton called up reinforcements from the Under-14 team and those who stepped up gave an excellent account of themselves.
In a game well-contested from kick-off to the final whistle, the first period saw both sides create chances, but neither managed to break the deadlock and half-time arrived with the game goalless.
Honiton upped the tempo after the break and were rewarded when Sam Foster, full of confidence following his six goal haul in the previous week’s game, grabbed the opener, reacting sharply when his initial shot was saved.
A second goal soon followed when Jack Hawker found space at a corner and headed firmly home.
Any thoughts Honiton had of seeing the game out easily were thwarted, though, as they were unable to find the security of a third goal to give them breathing space. However, despite a few nervous moments after their lead was halved, when a hosts’ midfielder was allowed to run forward unchallenged and fire home from edge of the area, Honiton finished strongly, to take the three points.
All players deserve credit, but special mention should be made of the excellent performances from River Leisk and Kyle Williams.
