AXMOUTH United entertained a Chagford side who pitched up with three successive wins under their belts.
The same old nemesis that has blighted United in recent weeks, conceding an early goal, struck again!
The problem this time was poor marking at a seventh minute corner that resulted in Chagford taking full advantage.
The United response was good and they were a whisker away from levelling ten minutes later when a shot was cleared off the Chagford goal line.
The equaliser did indeed arrive in the 32nd minute when a swift change of direction in the box by Charlie Clarke resulted in an opposition defender handling the ball and Jamie Hughes tucked the spot kick away – that his twelfth goal of the campaign.
Three minutes late and United had the lead with Clarke once again the provider for Christian Burridge to apply a polished finish.
It might have got better twice within six minutes before the break when Burridge spurned opportunities to increase the United advantage and so they went into the break with a 2-1 lead.
After the break the home side continued to control the game despite the visitors always carrying a threat on the break.
The goal that effectively sealed the contest came in the 66th minute. Glenn Gould picked the ball up some thirty yards out, looked up to see the Chagford keeper off his line and despatched the sweetest of long range lofted shots that nestled in the back of the net for a 3-1 United lead.
Four minutes later the visitors’ were back in the game courtesy of a successful penalty, but, thereafter, with Dack, Sweetland, Challis and Sweeney defending superbly as a back four, the United goal did not come under threat and they were able to see the game out and seal a 3-2 win and bank three priceless points in their bid to finish in the top three and so gain promotion to Division Five.
Man of the Match went to Challis with Hughes a mighty close second.
