Honiton Town suffered a 4-1 defeat when they hosted Axminster Town in an East Devon derby at Mountbatten Park.

The loss, a sixth in nine outings since the start of the year, leaves the Hippos still very much in the battle to avoid a bottom two finish in the South West Peninsula League Eastern Division.

With five games remaining, Town are fourth bottom, five points above second bottom Alphington, who have played two games fewer, and also five points clear of third bottom Galmpton and Roselands, who have played one game fewer.

Axminster Town took a 14th minute lead with a rather fortuitous goal; a cross-cum-shot from Kieran Daniels that sailed over Hippos’ glovesman Rowan Symonds.

However, there was nothing ‘lucky’ about the second goal that arrived just six minutes later with Tony Pinder applying a clinical finish to round off a slick passing move by the Tigers.

The move began with Jamie Barfoot and Aaron Daniels combining well on the right flank before Kieran Daniels provided the ‘assist’ for Pinder to rifle a volley home.

Honiton were always ‘in the contest’, but were unable to find a finish to a number of promising moves and, midway through the second half, a poor clearance by Symonds was seized upon by Pinder, who rolled the ball into the empty net.

At 3-0 it was all over for the home side, but the visiting Tigers gave their travelling supporters one more moment of joy when Aaron Daniels scored to make it 4-0. Martyn Hancock scored a late consolation for the Hippos’, but the points had been decided long before the 84th minute Hancock finish.

This coming week should see things become a little clearer in terms of the basement berths in the Eastern Division for all the bottom five are in action .

On Monday night Galmpton and Roselands are at Crediton United. On Tuesday (April 24), Honiton Town host University and Liverton entertain Teignmouth and, on Wednesday, there’s a ‘huge’ game at Alphington, where Sidmouth Town are the visitors’.

Next Saturday (April 28), Honiton Town host Bovey Tracey, Alphington go to Ilfracombe, Liverton entertain Torridgeside and Sidmouth host Galmpton and Roselands.
