Honiton Town edged out by title-chasing Newton Abbot Spurs

Honiton Town were beaten for the second time in three days when they lost their Monday night South West Peninsula League (SWPL) Eastern Division game at home Newton Abbot Spurs.
However, the Hippos only went down to a narrow 2-1 defeat and can take great heart from the fact that this meeting came just 23 days after they were thrashed 8-0 by the same side when they met at Newton Abbot!
After Saturday’s 4-2 home defeat to Bovey Tracey – a game in which the Hippos’ goals were scored by Blake Freemantle and Ashley Mitchell – Town supporters must have ventured along to Mountbatten Park on Monday night fearing the worst, but they will have been delighted with what they saw as Town gave as good as they got for long periods and there would have been little complaint from the visitors had the game ended in a draw! Darren Witt was the stand-out individual for Town who are back in action tonight (May 2) when they entertain Alphington (6.45pm) and they are are also in action next Monday (May 7) when they travel to North Devon to meet Appledore (2pm), a game that marks the end of their first season in the SWPL Eastern Division.
Heading into tonight’s game Town do still need a win to make sure they avoid a bottom two finish – that will be certain if they defeat the Alphas at Mountbatten Park!
