Honiton Town dropped a couple of points when they were held by Wellington Reserves at Mountbatten Park.

A huge consolation for the Hippos on what was clearly an off-day for them, was that none of their rivals were able to steal a march on them in the other Fresha League One games that beat the weather.

Town boss Kev Blackwell said: “It was what we’ll call a ‘bad day at the office’. However, we will play worse than that and win, and play better and lose, so to be disappointed with a 0-0 shows how far the team has come. It’s the team that has set the standards throughout the season and I am afraid that they did not get even near to reaching that level in this game. Indeed, but for the excellent keeping again of Matty Long and stout defending from Darren Witt we could have been looking at a home defeat rather than a point.”

Blackwell continued: “Although Wellington were good value for the point, as an attacking unit we never really got going. However, disappointing the lads were collectively, ultimately the buck stops with me. I selected a side that I felt was the right one on the day, the failure to pick up three points rests with me and hold myself fully accountable for the disappointment.

“What adds to my discomfort is that we drew a healthy crowd to Mountbatten Park and it’s a crying shame that we did not send them home happy. We remain top of the table and we ‘got away with one’ with rivals Newton St Cyres also dropping points. We approach the business end of the campaign and this is the time the lads must fight any thoughts of complacency. We have some very decent teams breathing down our necks!”

On Saturday Town travel to Westexe to meet a Tiverton side that has won three on the spin since a December 20, 4-0 defeat at Exmouth Amateurs.
