Colaton Raleigh 4, Honiton Town 7 (after extra-time)
Honiton Town booked a Firewatch Devon Senior Cup semi-final berth with a superb all-round performance at Newton Poppleford.
Dan Broom fired Town ahead only for Colaton Raleigh to level. Tim Genders restored the Town advantage but once again the home side levelled and then they took the lead. Darren Witt made it 3-3 and Sam Farmer looked to have scored the winner until Colaton Raleigh levelled to make it 4-4 in the final minute. Extra-time saw Town take charge once Witt netted his second after which there was no stopping Kev Blackwell’s side and they added further goals from Dan Broom and Matt Brown to deservedly march into the last four and a meeting with Tiverton Town Reserves at Mountbatten Park on Saturday, March 9.
A delighted Blackwell said: “To a man the lads were brilliant. We spoke at length before the game about what we felt we needed to do and, even when they took the tie to extra-time we showed real character to find new energy and finish much the stronger. This is exactly the sort of performance and result I had championed when I took over at the club. My thinking then was to start making headlines for the club about team performances and results rather than managerial changes and this is a special moment. That said we now have a massive task looking to beat what I am sure are going to be a very strong Tivvy Town side.”
On Saturday it’s back to Fresha League Division Two action and a trip to Halwill. It’s only league outing number eight in a 26 game campaign for Town.
Blackwell says: “It’s important we keep our feet firmly on the ground. The league campaign is our bread and butter and ultimately what we, as a team will be judged on. I want Honiton Town playing at the highest level possible and to achieve that aim we need to be able to go to the likes of Halwill and bring back all three points.”
