Honiton Town 4, Halwill 2
Town took their sensational Fresha League success into the Firewatch Devon Senior Cup to bag a place in the last eight of this year’s competition, writes Steve Birley.
Given that the two sides had met in a Fresha League match just two weeks before it’s not surprising that the game was well contested for the full 90 minutes!
Town were made to work hard for their victory, but the challenge seemed the bring the best out of the Mountbatten Park men who, at times, played some delightful football.
The deadlock was broken when Shaun Cox got on the end of a crisp passing move. Leading scorer Tim Genders doubled the lead with a low strike midway through the first half and then Lewis Couch missed a penalty with the visiting glovesman producing a stunning save. Just before the break Halwill halved the deficit with a clinical finish.
Genders restored the tw0-goal advantage early in the second half, this his 23 of a prolific season. Brad Groves made sure of the last eight berth with the fourth and even a late second form the North Devon side failed to dampen the home spirits.
Town boss Kev Blackwell said: “The changing room after the game was deadly quiet. Not because there was disappointment with the result or the performance. No, it was amore that, to a man, they had all worked so hard and had nothing left to give, even in celebration! I am so pleased that not only are they all fantastic players, but clearly they share a collective desire to get a job done. To top the Fresha Two table and have a last eight berth in the County Cup with Christmas looming is testament to the hard work this team is putting in. Here’s hoping they keep on delivering, if they do I am going to be loving every minute of this campaign.”
On Saturday Town entertain Colyton on Saturday in a Fresha League East Devon derby.
