After months of wet weather and countless matches being postponed there was wall to wall sunshine for the Wednesday night Honiton Town versus St Martins South West Peninsula League Eastern Division game.
However, despite the sunshine it still rained – but on this occasion it rained goals with the Hippos and the Exminster-based visitors scoring 11 between them.
Town skipper Ben Ede joins the list of players who have scored a hat-trick – and yet still ended up on the losing side.
Ede opened the scoring, and notched his second from the penalty spot to level things up at 2-2.
Three more goals from St Martins gave them a healthy 5-2 half-time lead. After the break Ede completed his hat-trick and then, when Joe Mulhall scored to make it 5-4 the outcome of the game was once more in the balance.
St Martins kept powering forward and did eventually add two more to take the game away from the Hippo’s, but those fortunate enough to have been at Mountbatten Park were able to go home feeling highly satisfied with their evening’s entertainment.
Next up for Town is Saturday’s East Devon derby meeting with Axminster Town. Kick-off at Mountbatten Park is 3pm.
