Tiverton Town 2:3 Honiton Town
Honiton Town produced the result of the Fresha League season to date when they won 3-2 at Division Two champions-elect Tiverton Town.
What made the victory at Ladysmead all the more impressive was that Town became the first team to defeat the Mid Devon outfit in the league this season!
A Tim Genders brace put Honiton into dream land at Ladysmead. Then, two minutes after Joe Dixon’s header cannoned back off the crossbar, the hosts were back in the game with a goal just before the break.
Shortly after half-time Tivvy struck again to level things up and then threw everything they had at the Town back line who proved equal to the best the table toppers could offer. With fifteen minutes to go Town began to once again take charge. After they had spurned a number of promising situations, Paul Blackmore slammed home what proved to be the winning goal.
A delighted Town boss Gary Osbourne said: “That was as good a collective effort as the team has produced since I took charge. Even when they (Tivvy) got back at 2-2 I was thinking that if we were to be beaten then at least we’d put a right shift in. To win was just wonderful but this was no fluke result. We deserved it and a very gracious Tivvy outfit acknowledged that post match.” He continued: “After the previous week’s performance and defeat it was a long week chewing on the disappointment, now it’s going to be a long week of basking in the glory of a job very well done.”
Tim Genders bagged the Man of the Match award, whilst his strike partner Paul Blackmore was mighty close to the landing the honour himself.
The Tivvy triumph leaves Town still just four points above the relegation berths, but in what is a very congested table, they are also now just five points shy of a promotion place!
On Saturday they host Uplowman. Osbourne says: “I’ll remind the players of our epic effort at Tiverton but caution them that to then throw away points against Uplowman would render last Saturday’s result as pointless. From here it’s certainly onwards and upwards.”
