Millwey Rise went down 2-0 on their visit to Hemyock for a Macron League Division Five game.
The home side very nearly went into the lead after only two minutes when they hit the bar from a free-kick just outside the area.
Millwey Rise then had their best period of football in the whole game and put Hemyock’s defence under continual pressure without being able to capitalise with a goal.
The inevitable happened when, after 15 minutes, Millwey were slow to clear their lines and Ollie Wilkins nipped in to score. Hemyock then became more dominant and thirty minutes in nearly increased their lead with a shot that flew just the wrong side of the post with Jack Bennet in goal well beaten.
The half came to a close with Sam Turner, who suffered a ham string problem, being replaced by Dave Bridges.
In the early stages of the second period Millwey had two fleeting opportunities to score.
The first when Brad Lee Miller’s free kick drifted just wide of the upright and then Nathan Womersley fed Shane Featherstone through, but his shot was snuffed out by the quick tackling defenders.
Nicky Land gave way to Haydn Lewis for the final thirty minutes. Hemyock continued to play some attractive football and were quick to nullify any threat from the Millwey forward line.
It was no surprise, when after squandering several clear cut opportunities, Ash` Saunders forced the ball home in a goalmouth melee to increase their lead. Jack Farrant did graze the home side’s post in the final minutes, but this was the closest ‘Rise’ were to come.
For Millwey, Alex Rocket was a colossus in defence and together with the home side’s inability to put the ball in the net was the reason the score remained at 2-0.
On Saturday (March 3) Exwick Village 1st XI are the visitors to Cloakham in the Football Express Cup (2pm).
