Millwey Rise retained second spot in the Perry Street league Division One table with a hard fought 1-1 draw against a Winsham side relegated from the top flight with them last year, writes Dick Sturch.
After three weeks without a game Millwey found the going hard in the first quarter of the game until some cohesive play in midfield enabled a chance for Mark Pike who calmly lobbed the Winsham keeper to open the scoring. The home side held this lead until the thirtieth minute when their defence mistakenly pulled up anticipating offside, only for the Winsham forward to continue his run and slot the ball between the posts for an equaliser.
The second half became a dour struggle of attrition with few glimpses of quality by either side eventually petering out into a one all draw, which under the circumstances, favoured Millwey. This enabled them to hang on to their runners-up position in the table.
A consensus of opinion from the Tea Hut terrace made Nathan Hoole, Millwey`s goalkeeper, their man of the match with Danny Larcombe a strong contender. Joint Managers Simon Flint and Shane Featherstone were pleased with the all round performance given the long lay off the team experienced.
This Saturday (February 28), Millwey Rise first team travel to Lyme Bantams in the Arthur Gage Cup (2pm) and the Reserves also travel, they go to Merriot Dynamos in the Bill Bailey Cup (2pm).
