Newton nets and Honiton Under-11s make a good point at Copplestone

Honiton Youth Under-11s were good value for a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at Copplestone Fitzpaine in their latest league encounter, writes Stuart Ward.

Playing on a bumpy surface, the opening skirmishes saw exchanges of possession with both teams getting into good areas without really threatening the goal.

However, midway through the first half, some indecision in defence allowed the home side to score twice in quick succession.

This setback stung Honiton into action and taking the game to their opponents, they pulled a goal back when Ben Spence slid in to score from a Caleb Freemantle centre. The remainder of the half saw Honiton continuing to press but they failed to find another goal and went into the break a goal down.

The second period followed a similar pattern and Honiton were soon level when a cross-shot from Spence was diverted into the goal by a home defender with Harvey Newton waiting for a tap in.

Honiton continued to boss the game, but they couldn’t turn their dominance into more goals thanks to some dogged defending and one particularly fine save from the Copplestone goalkeeper.
