Honiton U12s made the short journey to Ottery St Mary on Saturday for their latest league encounter.

Although eager for a result following two defeats in a row, the early stages saw Honiton struggle to play any cohesive football.

Eventually they settled and began to string a few passes together.

The visitors then moved into the lead when Ben Spence ran on to a long clearance from goalkeeper Will Whitworth and finished well.

A second goal quickly followed with Becky Rose bundling home a corner from close range.

Honiton then failed to capitalise on their superior possession and half-time arrived with no further score.

Honiton knew that the first goal after the break was vital but despite a thumping header from Max Salter coming back off the crossbar, it was the hosts who found themselves back in the game with a well-taken goal.

Suddenly finding themselves under pressure, Honiton lost their shape and had Whitworth to thank after several important saves to stay ahead.

Eventually, Honiton regrouped and a Caleb Freemantle high ball towards the Otters’ goal saw the unfortunate home keeper allow it to run through his legs and across the line.

This spurred Honiton on and Spence put the game beyond doubt with two further goals to complete his hat-trick for a 5-1 victory.

The first came after he gambled on a long ball. The second was a cool, side-foot finish from an excellent Shane White pass.
