Walking football going from strength to strength

The walking football competition, held on the 3G surface at the LED Leisure Centre in Axminster on the final Sunday of January, proved to be a roaring success.
Twenty-five people, all over the age of 50, pitched up to take part, all showing, despite their age, that the ‘beautiful game’ is still there for them to enjoy – albeit in a bit more sedate fashion given the walking pace of the action!
First up was a match between Exminster and Honiton, narrowly won by Exminster, who scored the only goal of the game early on.
This was followed by a mini-tournament with four mixed teams each of six players and it was the D team who emerged as the winners.
Any injured pride or bruised egos were washed away at the Lamb Inn where many of the players had lunch and a pint!
Organiser Michael Holdsworth said: “It was a big success and to encourage more men and women to take up this sport we are considering an open evening at some point in the near future.”
