Frank Hart had his last round of golf on July 1, aged 96 when he finally called time on his golfing career, which all started 55 years ago up in Sheffield after serving in the Navy during WW2 and receiving his prized Russian Convoy Medal.
Frank joined Honiton Golf Club in 1985 and has been a regular in the Wednesday roll up, the group held a buffet and presentation on Wednesday and wished Frank all the best.
Peter Clarke won the Seniors monthly medal with a great score of a Nett 67, in second place was Peter Blake with 71, beating Michael Watts on countback in third.
The Ron Blatchford Trophy went to Steve Butcher with 38 points winning on countback from Club President Max Pipe. Winning the Green Jumper in the Seniors Masters was David Rouse with 39 points.
Honiton lost out to Ilfracombe in the Emerton Court Cup, losing 6-4 after home and away legs but had much better luck in the Stan Parker trophy, retaining the cup against Exeter, winning 7-5 over two legs.
The annual Ladies' Bradshaw Bogey Competition attracted over 30 players this week. Division One was won by Cathy Pawley with a magnificent score of 5, Susan Kelson followed closely in second place with a great score of 2 and Club Champion, Ann Trayling in third place with 0.
Division Two produced equally worthy winners, Liz Rogers taking first place with a score of -1, in second place was Linda Curtis with -3, and in third place was Sheila Palmer with -3. A great time was had by all.
Last week’s Tuesday Mixed was a Pairs Betterball and the top two places were decided on countback. Linda Curtis and Jason Gosling took first prize with a score of 40 and a back nine of 22, with Jane Hinton and Bill Eaton also scoring 40 but a back nine of 20. They were closely followed in third place by Olwen Eaton and Mike Delaney with 39 points.
The format for our Tuesday Mixed competition this week was a Greensomes Stableford and the winning honours went to Maggie and John Harvey with a score of 39 points. Second place went to Penny Blackburn and Mike Delaney on 37 points, with Maureen Lawrence and Jason Gosling in third place on countback with 36 points.
It was not such a good week for the Honiton men, losing two cup matches, the first at East Devon Golf Club, where they played in the Scratch Parker Cup, losing 2-1 against Crediton followed by a 3-2 defeat in the H/Cap Palairet Cup at Teignmouth against Saunton.
This was made all the more galling as this tie was originally played the previous Sunday and with Honiton well on top in the match, the fog came rolling-in and the match was abandoned.
Thanks goes to respective Captains Ross Latchem and Stu Slater for putting time in to arrange matches players and even shirts for these games.
