AN outstanding display of front running by Tristan Gale, with great support from strike partner Sam Dibling, helped Axminster Town chalk up their finest success of the season to date.Peninsula League Eastern Division leaders Galmpton Gents arrived at Sector Lane with bags of confidence and they got the perfect start, going a goal up inside the opening 15 minutes.Only a superb save by Chris Higgs prevented the Tigers falling further behind, but that would have been harsh, given the magnificent defending by the back four of Danny Galloway, Richard Challis, Michael Hancock and Mark Hancock who, collectively, battled away to allow their side to gradually gain a foothold in the contest. As the flow of the game changed it saw the Tigers begin to get on top and their inventiveness and industry was rewarded when Gale supplied a cross that was not cleared. When it fell to Ben Turner the 17-year-old sent it flying into the net. With another 17-year-old, Ben Vine, making his first full start for the side, and a most impressive one too, the attacking play of the home side was sharp and effective and they went into a half time 2-1 lead thanks to another 'assist' from Gale that young Vine netted with great conviction. After the break, the Tigers maintained their grip on the game thanks to a combination of disciplined defending, creative midfield play and some lightning quick attacking. The goal that sealed an outstanding victory came on 80 minutes when Dibling applied a stunning finish after more great approach play from Gale to seal a 3-1 win.At the final whistle many of a large Sector Lane crowd formed a guard of honour to applaud the team off the pitch. A delighted boss Ray Self said: "That's as good as it gets in this business. Galmpton are a decent side but we first stood up to them and weathered their best, then took charge before finally sealing a richly deserved win."As for the remainder of the campaign Self says: "We have got ourselves into a great position to go on and look for a top four finish and that would represent a really successful campaign."There's no game for the Tigers on Saturday, but they do have an Axminster Hospital Cup tie on Sunday with the visit of Exmouth Town. Self says: "We are taking the Hospital Cup very seriously and will be going all out to book a last four berth.
