Glorious golf at Axe Cliff ladies' open

The Axe Cliff ladies were delighted to be able to hold their Open on Friday in lovely weather - last year was a wash out.

The overall winners were a team from Vivary Park, Jeanette Jones, Caren Potter and Sheila Grant with 80 points.

As usual, Wells ladies always send a few teams and this paid off as they won the visitors; prize. The ladies were Marian Boyed, Jill Bocquet and Jill Coglan. Second were Yvonne Wisbroom, Alison Leatt and Julie Jones from Mendip Springs with 79 points, and third prize went to Mrs Ford, Mrs Boucher and Mrs Cafferkey from Came Down with 77 winning on the back nine ruling from Helen Gaudie Axe Cliff, Joyce Henderson, Royal Mid Surrey, and Julia Collins, Lyme Regis, also with 77, getting fourth prize.

The front nine was won by Penny Sweetland, Axe Cliff, Michelle Bowers and Elsie Jellyman with 42 points and back nine was won by Chris Pearce, Brenda Hyde and Rosemary Greenhorn, Honiton, with 39 points.

Nearest the pin was Julia Collins and longest drive on the 13th Jane Gould.

The lady captain and helpers put on a great day for all the competitors.

l The ladies played their September medal with Axe Cliff 3 and Freddie Newbery putting competition no1. The winner of the medal, with 74 nett, was Liz Wheeldon (25) and second was Sandra Walker (14) with a nett 81.
